The material is what I go up to Alaska and acquire from the natives each year at the end of the summer. The ivory in this guitar slide was cut from what had been a tool (ice axe) many thousands of years ago. The natives would sometimes use ivory that had already been around, frozen and preserved for thousands of years...taking advantage of easy access material. At any rate, the natives today find and bring in small amounts of these ancient ivories at the end of the summer. I am blessed to be able to hand pick the pieces from that pile which I think will produce the most incredible colors and textures. I feel like I get to carry on the honoring of the animal and the culture which was involved in the eco-system thousands of years ago. This cut of the tusk produced a solid piece of ivory for the bulk of the slide where the hole is located and yet I was still was able to use some of the outside "bark" to attain the color and texture jproducedc by it's antiquity. A beautiful piece. To order a custom slide such as this, email rex@rexfoster.com ![]() |
